There’s something about San Marcos La Laguna that’s hard to explain—until you experience it.
I didn’t come here planning to stay. In fact, when I first arrived over 20 years ago, it was an entirely different world. The main draw to town was places like Las Pirámides meditation center and La Paz. People came for yoga, meditation, and the simplicity of lake life. This was before cell phones—there were no messages to arrange meet-ups. You simply left your house and bumped into whoever you were meant to meet that day. There were narrow paths winding through coffee fields and banana trees. Mornings were often spent at “the rocks” (what is now the nature reserve), swimming, talking, or just being. I often joke about those who came for lunch… and stayed for life. And in many ways, that’s still true. 🌊 The Pros 1. A Lifestyle That Slows You Down (In the Best Way) Life here moves differently. There’s less urgency, less pressure to constantly be doing. And while that sounds idyllic, I’ll be honest—it can feel uncomfortable at first. I remember that shift myself. When the pace slowed down, there was suddenly space… and in that space, I realized how much I had been carrying. But after a few days, something softened. My body began to relax in a way I hadn’t experienced in a long time. That’s something I now see often in my work—when the environment changes, the nervous system finally has a chance to settle. 🌿 2. A Global, Conscious (and Unconventional) Community San Marcos has always attracted a very particular kind of person. Many of the original foreigners who came here weren’t just looking for a beautiful place—they were looking for a different way of living. Something calmer, more meaningful. And honestly, I still believe that’s true. The people who are drawn to San Marcos often don’t feel like they fully fit into the mainstream world. They question things. They see life differently. They may have been the “black sheep” in their families, or simply have a different idea of what success looks like. Some might call that unconventional. Others might even label it in less flattering ways. But from my perspective, it’s simply a willingness to think outside the box—or even to erase the box entirely. That said, there is a wide spectrum here. From deeply grounded individuals to those still finding their way, San Marcos has always attracted people willing to explore, question, and sometimes push boundaries. And that creates a community that is open, curious, and often surprisingly honest. 🧘♀️ 3. Access to Holistic Healing & Learning This is one of the things that has remained constant over the years. People come here to heal. Through my work in massage, Reiki, and kinesiology, I’ve seen how much people carry when they arrive—physically, emotionally, and energetically. And I’ve also seen how quickly things can begin to shift when the body feels safe enough to let go. San Marcos offers not just sessions, but opportunities to learn, to go deeper, and to integrate healing into daily life. For many, it becomes a turning point. 🌅 4. Nature Is Part of Your Everyday Life Even with the changes and development over the years, the natural beauty of this place remains undeniable. The lake, the volcanoes, the changing light throughout the day—it’s something you don’t just look at, but live within. It naturally pulls you out of your head and back into your body. 🏡 5. Opportunities to Create a Different Kind of Life Over time, I’ve watched people not only come here to rest—but to rebuild. Some begin offering their own work. Some create small businesses or retreat spaces. Others decide to stay longer, rent, or invest in property. San Marcos has a way of opening doors—not always in the way you expect, but often in the way you need. ⚖️ The Cons (And What to Be Aware Of) 🌧️ 1. It’s Not Always Comfortable San Marcos is not a polished, first-world environment. There are still:
🛠️ 2. Things Move Slowly If you’re used to efficiency and structure, this can take some getting used to. Here, things happen in their own time. Patience isn’t optional—it’s part of the experience. 🌊 3. Emotional Stuff Can Surface This is something I’ve experienced personally—and something I see regularly in my work. When life slows down and distractions fall away, what we’ve been holding doesn’t disappear… it becomes more visible. For some, that can feel intense. But it’s also where real change begins. ✈️ 4. It’s Not for Everyone Long-Term Some people come and immediately know they’ve found their place. Others realize they miss structure, stability, the pace of city life or find it to "woo woo." That's okay, every town around the lake has a discint energy and it's important that you find the place that resonates with YOU. San Marcos tends to reflect back what you need—but that doesn’t always mean it’s a forever place. 🌿 So… Is San Marcos Right for You? Despite all the development over the years, I still believe the core energy of this place hasn’t changed. It continues to attract people who are searching—not necessarily for something specific, but for something different. People who are willing to question, to explore, to feel, and to live outside of conventional paths. 🌊 Final Thoughts 🌿 A Note on Respecting the Local CultureWhile San Marcos offers a unique and welcoming environment for visitors from around the world, it’s important to remember that we are living within an Indigenous Mayan village—one that is rich in culture, tradition, and community. This isn’t just a destination—it’s someone else’s home. One of the most meaningful parts of being here is the opportunity to connect with the local Mayan residents. A simple smile, a greeting, or a conversation can open the door to a deeper understanding of the place we’re in. There is so much to learn from the culture here—through daily interactions, shared spaces, and the rhythms of village life. Supporting the local community is also part of that experience. Buying fresh produce, handmade textiles, and goods directly from local families not only contributes to the local economy, but also creates a more genuine and connected way of living here. When we engage with awareness and respect, our experience of San Marcos becomes not just about what we receive—but also about how we participate. San Marcos La Laguna isn’t just a destination. It’s a place where people come to pause, to reconnect, and often, to redefine what life looks like for them. For me, it became more than just a place to live. It became a place where I could reconnect—with myself, with my work, and with a different way of being. And for many others… it becomes the place where something shifts. 🌿 Curious About Living or Visiting?Whether you’re exploring:
